R&D Hardware Test Engineer - Mechanical Focus

Figure is an AI Robotics company developing a general purpose humanoid. Our humanoid robot, Figure 02, is designed for commercial tasks and the home. We are based in San Jose, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration. It’s time to build.

We are seeking an experienced Hardware Test Engineer with a strong mechanical background to join the Hardware Team and lead the testing of our actuators and motion/force sensors. In this role, you will work closely with hardware design engineers to test the performance of novel hardware and compare it to currently-implimented hardware. 

This role will own all mechanical roles related to testing, including dyno/fixture design and setup, motor/sensor selection for dynos/fixtures, and troubleshooting of robotic systems. This role will work closely with the software-focused hardware test engineer to own and implement all R&D hardware testing, ensuring the development of robust, high-performance hardware solutions for our humanoid.

Responsibilities

  • Own testing of actuators and sensors, including CAD design/setup of testing systems
  • Work alongside software-focused test engineer to troubleshoot test hardware
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather test requirements and author test procedures
  • Document integration processes, test plans, and validation results 
  • Provide actionable feedback to hardware R&D engineers, contributing to efficient development of new hardware solutions
  • Develop cross-disciplinary knowledge of actuation subsystems to drive continuous improvement

Requirements

  • Passionate about discovering hardware problems through rigorous testing and working closely with design engineers to find better solutions
  • 4+ years of experience in hardware test engineering with a mechanical focus
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of 3D CAD to design and implement test setups for novel components
  • Experience with mechanical design of dynos and fixtures
  • Experience with troubleshooting dynos and testing fixtures 
  • Experience with selecting electric motors, gearboxes, force/torque sensors, position sensors, and relevant setup and data acquisition techniques. 
  • Multidisciplinary knowledge spanning actuators, sensors, mechanical engineering, test procedures, and data analysis
  • Strong experimental, communication, documentation skills

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with CATIA V6
  • Experience with designing and executing test plans for mobile robots
  • Experience creating schematics and layout for basic PCB interfaces
  • Experience with electrical wiring for data acquisition and motor control
  • Experience with consumer electronics and/or automotive testing standards such as JESD22-A104, ISO16750-1, UL2595, IEC 60068 and GMW3172
  • Experience with characterization of actuators and force/motion sensors
  • Experience with real-time testing systems such as DSpace or Speedgoat
  • Experience with MATLAB and Python
  • Experience programming C++ for embedded systems

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $110,000 - $180,000 annually.

The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.
