About the Team
The post-training team is responsible for training and improving the pre-trained models to be deployed into ChatGPT, the API, and to other internal research teams. Within post-training, the retrieval team develops retrieval technology to power ChatGPT and new product experiences built on OpenAI’s reasoning models.
About the Role
We are seeking a research tech lead / manager (TLM) for the post-training retrieval team to lead a team of researchers and research engineers. The focus of this team is to develop technology that allows our models to efficiently and accurately access information from private knowledge sources. This technology will be used in many frontier models and applications across our Research organization. This is not just a RAG implementation role. Our team’s goal is to rethink the way retrieval can work for agentic AI systems from first principles.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Have experience managing high-impact teams of research engineers / research scientists
Have research expertise in large language models and information retrieval (eg RAG)
Have research experience in reinforcement learning and deep learning
Have led or closely collaborated with a team that have scaled large scale ML systems
