FBOSS team is a software team in the Network Infrastructure group, that empowers network devices we use in our data centers. FBOSS stands for Facebook Open Switching System, and it's a software stack running on the network switches in Meta’s data centers across the world. We work on some of the most critical infrastructure challenges at Meta. Our current focus is building networking switch platforms for our AI clusters that power large language models (LLM) for Generative AI, Recommendation engine, and Metaverse. Our team works on all the stages of network switches, from defining new switch requirements, to hardware/software design, software development, along with supporting the latest cutting edge Layer 1 components such as Transceivers and PHYs, in operations.
Systems Software Engineer - FBOSS Responsibilities:
- Design and implement Platform services such as those used for programming, monitoring, and controlling layer 1 components (Transceivers, Optics and PHYs) and the corresponding system components (sensors, fan control, power etc).
- Design and implement services implementing transceiver access standards such as SFF and CMIS, and PHY abstraction interfaces such as SAI.
- Own workstreams focussed on hardware bringup, BSP/SDK bringup, Platform services bringup, and lead the cross-functional effort to complete Engineering validation of new switches.
- Debug complex, system-level, multi-component issues that typically span across multiple layers from Kernel, and user-mode applications.
- Lead debugging and signal integrity tuning exercises
- Profile performance problems and drive optimizations that span the entire software stack.
- Understand software components from multiple partner teams, lead the integration of those components into the unified product code base, and drive their continued development.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Software Engineering experience in embedded systems.
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience working on systems software in a large-scale C/C++ code base.
- Experience in hardware bringup using interfaces like I2C, SPI, GPIO etc.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: Layer 1 network development, BSP/Board Support Package, Operating Systems, IPC, Linux, Transceivers, PHYs.
- Experience with Software Development processes including: source control, bug tracking, and design documentation.
- Experience developing, debugging, and shipping software products on large code bases that span platforms and tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated specialized experience in two or more of the following areas: Layer 1 - Layer 2 network operations, Monitor Optics, PHY, FPGAs, sensors, fan control, power etc, BSP/Board Support Package, Operating Systems, Kernel, Vendor SDKs, Linux.
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in large cross-functional teams
About Meta:
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
