Why this Role?
This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of trust-by-design for enterprise AI solutions. We are seeking a Counsel, Privacy and AI Regulation to join our Legal team and help navigate the complex global regulatory landscape governing AI, data privacy, and emerging technologies. This role will partner closely with product and other cross-functional stakeholders to shape and scale Cohere’s approach to trustworthy design, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation in line with global regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will balance legal rigor with a pragmatic, business-oriented mindset.
As a member of our Legal Team, you will:
Serve as a trusted advisor to product managers, engineers, and designers, providing real-time legal guidance on AI/ML solutions, including on preventing misuse and addressing safety, privacy, and copyright risks and mitigations.
Draft and implement internal policies, workflows, and risk assessments to ensure compliance with global AI and privacy regulations.
Convert complex legal requirements and industry standards (e.g. CCPA, US State AI legislation, industry codes of practice) into actionable technical and operational requirements.
Develop expertise on global laws, regulations, and industry standards and trends relevant to AI enterprise solutions and advise on strategic responses.
Partner with external legal counsel, policymakers, and internal stakeholders including GRC, Security, Safety, Policy and Government Affairs, and Go-to-Market teams to align product strategies with and shape emerging regulatory trends.
Negotiate and draft data processing agreements and AI regulatory terms in customer and vendor agreements.
You may be a good fit if you have:
J.D. and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California preferred).
4+ years of legal experience. A combination of law firm and in-house experience at an enterprise software company is preferred.
Expertise in data protection, AI, and digital platform regulation (e.g., CCPA, EU AI Act).
Deep understanding of AI/ML technologies and platforms, product development lifecycles, and data governance.
Track record of building cross-functional relationships and translating legal concepts into clear, actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders.
Comfort operating in a fast-paced technology company, adapting to new priorities, and navigating ambiguity.
If some of the above doesn’t line up perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply!
We value and celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive work environment for all. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to providing equal opportunities.
