Who you are
Metropolis is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Revenue Platform team. In this role, you will lead the development and maintenance of our billing and invoicing systems, ensuring that millions of transactions are processed accurately and efficiently. You will own the technical execution for high-priority projects. As an expert on the team, you will collaborate closely with Accounting and cross-functional partners to build clear and reliable financial workflows. You are a self-driven engineer who takes pride in high-quality craft and seeks to improve the systems you touch. Your contribution will be vital in ensuring our revenue platform remains robust as Metropolis reimagines commerce in the physical world, giving time back to our members through seamless, checkout-free experiences.
What you’ll do
- Own the engineering execution and evolution of the billing and invoicing platform to ensure financial accuracy
- Scale backend infrastructure to handle increasing memory demands and a growing customer base
- Lead the technical delivery of high-priority Stripe integrations and payment interface enhancements
- Design and implement flexible payment authorization logic for diverse merchant models
- Partner with Accounting and internal stakeholders to resolve complex billing disputes and improve transparency
- Build and maintain highly reliable billing jobs that power the company’s core revenue engine
- Deliver end-to-end features that provide significant value to business and financial operations
- Drive engineering best practices, including monitoring, observability, and transaction integrity
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the overall technical excellence of the team
- Manage release processes and on-call responsibilities for the revenue platform services
What we’re looking for
- 6+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
- Master Java/Scala and JVM-based environments to build high-performance revenue systems
- Utilize relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL to manage critical financial data
- Build and scale distributed systems within AWS to support a rapidly growing platform
- Own complex features independently from initial design through to production deployment
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders like Accounting
- Navigate and improve complex codebases to ensure long-term system health and maintainability
- Deliver high-quality, reliable code in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Utilize rapidly developing AI-assisted development skills in real-world codebases, including tools like Claude Code or Windsurf
- Identify and resolve system bottlenecks and infrastructure constraints proactively
- Reside locally in the Seattle area
While not required, these are a plus
- BS or MS in Computer Science or a relevant engineering discipline
- Integrate Stripe or other third-party payment processors at scale
- Apply expertise in idempotent transactions and failed payment recovery strategies
- Navigate financial compliance standards such as PCI-DSS
- Experience building internal financial tooling or revenue operations software

Our Product Foundations team values technical excellence, deep systems thinking, and the kind of complex engineering work that enables entire businesses to scale. You will play a key role in building the technical foundation that will support Metropolis as we expand into new mobility verticals and markets.
The anticipated base salary for this position is $220,000 - $250,000 annually. The actual base pay offered is determined by several variables, including, as appropriate, the applicant's qualifications for the position, years of relevant experience, distinctive skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location of residence and/or place of employment. Base pay is one component of Metropolis's total compensation package, which may also include access to or eligibility for healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a lucrative stock option plan, bonus plans, and more.
