Meet the team behind this journey
DeepL's Legal department is looking for an experienced and driven individual to build and lead our Compliance function. In this role, you will leverage your experience to shape and implement critical compliance processes and procedures with a strong emphasis on ethical practices. Initially, you will serve as an individual contributor, taking the lead in developing our program. As the department grows, you will be expected to recruit, build and lead a high-performing compliance team to ensure DeepL’s adherence to regulatory requirements as well as industry specific and ethical standards.
Your responsibilities
- Build, develop, implement and maintain an effective compliance program (and the corresponding team) that includes relevant policies and procedures and reflects high ethical practices.
- Build a culture of integrity and ethics by embedding these values and practices into all programs and processes.
- Monitor and interpret regulatory changes and ensure company policies align with laws and regulations.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
- Develop and deliver compliance training programs for employees.
- Cooperate with business units (Engineering, Product, DevOps, Finance, People & Culture etc.) on a regular basis to facilitate implementation of compliance practices and controls within the organisation.
- Prepare and present compliance reports to senior management.
- Evaluate company risks on an ongoing basis, perform risk assessments, and risk treatment.

Qualities we look for
- A successful candidate should have ideally at least 8+ years of experience in Legal, Ethics or Compliance.
- Experience developing and implementing a comprehensive compliance program from the ground up, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements, industry standards and ethical practices.
- Established people management skills (as the role will also involve building the compliance team).
- Demonstrated ethical standards and commitment to integrity, including the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
- A strong understanding of legal requirements and knowledge of best practice in fraud detection methodologies, sanctions screening and anti-money laundering typologies.
- Experience in a listed company, preferably in the US (including US regulations and compliance standards), is a significant plus.
- Familiar with the processes of software business (development/product/marketing process etc.) is a plus.
- Professional certifications (e.g., CCEP) are highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Problem-solving and decision-making skills to analyse complex information and identify the key issue/action to drive resolutions.
- Proven ability to operate in ambiguous environments and exhibit flexibility in navigating from current state to proposed solutions.
- Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills in English as we are an English speaking organisation.
